Letter: Dog walkers are a tight community
Thursday, March 24, 2005

Just five years ago I was told about Mt. Misery conservation land, "only seedy characters go there, it is unsafe - definitely don't go there alone." This idea was confirmed by an abutter of 22 years who said at the Conservation Commission meeting March 16 that in the past, Mt. Misery had a poor reputation. It might be that the people who walk their dogs now, have helped to create the much friendlier and positive environment that Mt. Misery has today. Almost all the attendees at the Conservation Commission meeting including three of the four abutters (all seemed to have lived adjacent to the land more than 20 years) disagreed with the dog leashing requirement that the committee plans to enact on April 4. A person who farms 12 acres also mentioned wanting to use his new dog to scare vermin from ruining his crops. Only the newest abutter complained that they often stand at their kitchen sink and watch dogs run around the field and into their yard. Couldn't some compromise be made to maintain the great community spirit that has been created at Mt. Misery? Most dogs I know are better behaved than most children (including my own) who often leave juice boxes and candy wrappers everywhere or adults who leave piles of nut shells behind.
Dog owners could always leash their dogs around the field and every weekend when many more people walk Mt. Misery. Dog owners should be required to carry out their dog's excrement in bags they bring along from home. A garbage can, maintained and emptied regularly could go a long way to keeping the area clean. It might be worth researching how they manage Weston Reservoir where there seems to be a successful system set up with much more dog traffic.
Lastly and most importantly, as a fairly new dog owner who lives in Wayland, I want to thank the people of Lincoln for the privilege of running with my dog through Mt. Misery. It is such great enjoyment and often therapeutic to be part of the natural beauty and commune with other dog owners. I would be glad to contribute a users fee.
