Letter: Lament over Mount Misery decisions
Thursday, April 7, 2005

I am contacting you regarding the new leash law, which is to be implemented on April 4. I just came back from my last walk in the idyllic woods known to locals as Mount Misery. What a shame, I have lived in Sudbury for close to 12 years and have enjoyed these woods on a frequent basis. Friendships have formed, not only between dogs but also more importantly between humans.
I tend to run, so I am often the one running by pairs or groups of people meting to walk their dogs. It is a rarity that I come across a "dog free" person walking in the woods. I am surprised that a town, which claims to be open minded and environmentally and socially friendly would impose such an unfair rule. Let's face it; it is not often that the majority can be kept happy with a compromise. This is that rare occurrence when a compromise could most certainly be worked out.
Last year Lincoln imposed a parking fee at the commuter lot and it is now empty. Within a couple months, Mount Misery will follow and also become empty. I am beginning to think that the goal is to keep people out of town.
